soft magic
Soft magic is a compilation of poems by Upile Chisala, a beautiful Malawian residing in Baltimore MD. This bright and captivating book is filled with thought provoking poems that uplift the spirit and encourage you to live fully and unapologetically black. I love the simplicity of the book, and the minimalistic style. I had to constrain myself from quoting every poem in it because it is so beautifully written. Upile's poems speak for themselves and can be interpreted in multiple ways. It has a theme of female empowerment, a message about love, and references to culture. I highly recommend that you get one for yourself, your siblings, best friends and the special guy in your life.
Here are a few of my favorite poems:
choose happiness every morning like you would an outfit
I am dripping melanin and honey.
I am black without apology.
darling, remember to run from men who promise you completion. you are already whole.
being this ebony. having this name. carrying this language in my mouth. there were times when I only wanted to blend in to sit unnoticed, un-special, but blending in is fading out.
little boys with sunshine in their giggles
are being mistakem for men
because their bodies were built like those of warriors
(for the moon-high baby boys of color who are still growing into their warrior bones. You are little. You are loved).
he found galaxies
in between the thighs of other girls
and suddenly the world
I was planning to offer him
just isn't enough
