Suicide Prevention Resources
In light of the recent suicides by popular American celebrities Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, I wanted to provide suicide prevention information for viewers in the United States. Suicide is a concept that is difficult for many people to understand especially when the individuals that take their lives seem to have it all. There are many factors that lead to suicides including mental illnesses like depression, economic conditions and, social isolation. Depression is one of the higher leading mental illnesses that result in suicide. I asked a close friend to describe what her struggle with depression feels like and this was her response.
“I think the easiest way I can describe depression is like falling down a well. You fall way-way down and splash into the barley deep cold water. You try to climb out but the walls are too slippery. You call out but no one hears you and overtime your voice gets too tired to say anything. You only have enough strength barely keep your head above the water. For some people, they never make it out of this well and drown. Luckily for me, I was able to let out one last cry for help and someone heard me.
”
According to the Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide rates have increased by 25% nationwide. There are no encouraging words I can say to take pain and sadness away but I believe that suicide is never the answer.
