How to Reinvent Yourself
This year, I have adopted the idea of creating my own destiny. No more sitting back and expecting things to fall into place, but I will take the initiative to create the life I want for myself.
Reinventing yourself is not only about changing your outward appearance, but getting a new outlook on life and approaching things differently. Reinventing yourself is a process that doesn't happen in one day. We see celebrities reinvent themselves all the time, some with good intentions and some for publicity. I believe that if you want to be a better person, become that person and carry yourself boldly. Every moring you wake up, you can choose to make the same mistakes you made the day before or you can choose to learn from them and move forward. You don't have to stay at that shitty job you hate or stick with those group of friends that don't add value to your life. Take a look at all the skills you have that can propel you to the next level in your life, then start going after what you want in life. Life is not about competing with others, but competing with yourself so think of reinventing yourself as the process of self growth.
Here are 4 ways to reinvent yourself :
1. Envision the person you want to be
Who do you want to be and what skills or character traits are required for you to become that person? Creating a mental picture of who you want to be gives you a goal to aim for. This can apply to your physical appearance or your career goals, or your personal growth process. Your mind is a powerful tool, and you have the ability to trick your mind into working in your favor. For example, if you imagine yourself giving a perfect speech to a crowd of people, you will most likely deliver a good speech. But if you think about how nervous you are, and allow that fear to invade your thoughts, your nerves will act up, and your performance will reflect that. By envisioning your future self, you can walk with confidence and eventually become the person you think you are.
2. Take daily steps toward your future self
Hoping and wishing to be a better person is all a waste if you are not actively making changes. Do something everyday that takes you one step closer to your goal. Do not expect change to happen overnight but make the investments necessary to get results.
3. Learn from your mentors
The people you surround yourself with will either limit you or expose you to more opportunities. Make friends with people who are on your level, and people who are where you want to be. Learn from great minds by reading books or watching interviews. I read a lot of articles by more successful blogs and pay attention to how they present their work. I follow may local creatives who are my age that inspire me to strive for excellence in everything I do. I also admire the grace and work ethic of our soon to be former first lady Michelle Obama and I aspire to carry myself as she does.
4. Believe in your own abilities
It took me over 8 months after college before I started to see myself as an individual with viable skillets.I never knew I could apply by blogging skills to my full-time job until they asked me to design their website. A huge part of reinventing yourself is maximizing on the things you are good at and improving the things you're not good at. I think a lot of young adults in the 20's struggle to see the skills that they possess. A few weeks ago I asked a close friend for her professional assistance on a project and she flinched at the word professional. I had to remind her that she just graduated with a B.A in journalism from a very reputable university, and she had experience, so yes you are a professional.
Once you envision yourself future self, start believing that you are already that person. Don't wait to become a better person, start now and you will be surprised how your life will be transformed. I hope this encourages you. Stay original loves.
