Nigerian Meat Pie Recipe

Nigerian meat pie is like no other, but there are so many recipe’s out there to make some. Here is my tried and tested recipe to get delicious and savory meat pie.

Dough Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 1/4 cup of water

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 250g cold margarine

  • 1 cold egg + 1 more for glazing

Instructions:

  • Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl then add room temperature butter into the bowl and use your fingers to mix the butter and dough together.

  • Beat an egg in a separate bowl and add it to the mix, along with the 1/4 cup of cold water.

  • Mix it all together until it’s a ball of dough, but don’t work the dough too hard.

  • Place the balled dough in plastic wrap and keep in the fridge for 30 - 4o minutes.

Meat Filling:

  • 300g of mincemeat

  • 2 chopped carrots

  • 6 baby potatoes

  • 3 tablespoons of flour

  • 1 red chili or scotch bonnet/habanero pepper)

  • 1 green chili

  • Canola oil

Instructions:

  • Pour the oil into the fire and let it heat up.

  • Chop the onions and add it to the warm oil, then add the meat, potatoes and veggies with the seasoning to the pot.

  • Let these items cook for about 15 to 20 minutes until the potatoes are soft and the veggies are cooked. (I don’t measure seasoning, I just add things and taste as I go so use your discression).

  • Once the filling is cooked, put it in a container and let it cool down, then place it in the fridge until the dough is ready.

Seasoning:

  • Curry powder

  • Dried thyme

  • Cayenne pepper or dry pepper

  • Salt

  • Seasoning cubes – knorr chicken cubes preferred

  • 1 bay leaf

  • 2 red onions

Meat Pie Process:

  • Preheat the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 180 degrees Celsius

  • Whisk 1 egg into a bowl for glazing

  • Take the meat pie dough out of the fridge and cut it into 8 even pieces or any other even number.

  • Flatted it out and then use a circular item to make a perfect circle.

  • Add a spoon full of the meat pie filling at the center of the dough, then spread the egg on the outer parts, as an adhesive.

  • Close the meat pie, and use a fork to press the edges together, then poke a hole at the very top of the meat pie.

  • Pray a baking sheet with oil and place the meat pies on it

  • Bake meat pie for 25 - 30 minutes
